
This forms part of what was an ancient through road. Entered through an archway off Cunninghame Street, it led to an enclosure within which was a Smithy and a haunt of Robert Burns. The seclusion of the area made it renowned as a meeting place out of the eyes of the general public.
After a time it became known as ‘Parliament Close’ reflecting the level of debate generated there.
