Allan Carswell is a lifelong resident of Tarbolton. Born in Mauchline, he received his education at Tarbolton Primary and Ayr Academy before embarking on a dynamic journey through life.
Allan initially worked as a painter and decorator in the village, starting with Meikle then joining McTaggart and Meikle. Later in his career, he concluded his working days at British Caledonian, Prestwick, specialising in the Heat Treatment Process.
His sporting prowess is equally noteworthy; he represented Tarbolton in football and enjoyed golf at Ballochmyle Golf Club. In 1960, Allan earned recognition as the Ayrshire Badminton Champion, showcasing his skill and dedication in yet another arena. He’s a versatile sports enthusiast, actively participating in both indoor and outdoor bowling. During National Service, Allan served in the Ayrshire Bomber Command.
In matters of the heart, Allan found lifelong love with Sheila, his childhood sweetheart, forming a bond that has stood the test of time.
An active member of the Lodge of Robert Burns - Tarbolton (Kilwinning) St. James No. 135, Allan served as its Master in 1972. Remarkably, he holds the distinction of being the oldest living Past Master of the Lodge, igniting his enduring passion for the works of Robert Burns.
Allan’s appreciation for Burns extends beyond his Masonic involvement. He has gained recognition for his captivating readings of Burns’ poetry, even collaborating with David Auld and Wallace Galbraith to produce a CD titled “The Bachelors’ Club Entertainers.” Their recitals at Loudon Hall during the Burns and a’ that festival were a memorable highlight. Notably, Allan shared his knowledge and passion for Burns in international settings, delivering a speech in Amsterdam alongside David Auld.
Since 1985, Allan has been an active member of the Bachelors’ Club committee, consistently contributing to the preservation and celebration of Robert Burns’ legacy.
